TRURO PATIO DESIGN
Create a conceptual design for a Cape Cod patio
This month let's explore a patio design for one of our own members: Susan McCabe. Susan has had a patio on her dream list for awhile, but has struggled on where and how to design it, so I thought it would be fun for us to explore possibilities.
We will keep this design on a CONCEPTUAL level (your drawings can be rough) and only focus on the patio itself (not particular plants). Think about where you'd like to place it, the shape and size, plus materials and paving patterns. Also, how would you lay out the furniture? Use lines of force to get you started.
This patio is on a hill, so you might need to include some potential stairs and walls...but remember this is conceptual and only an exercise. Draw them in, but this is not for construction, so do your best guess on possible placement.
I've included Susan's wish list below, plus a base map drawn at 1/8" scale (1:100).Â
Please note: If you'd like to design a patio for your own yard or another client instead, please do that!Â

CLIENT PROGRAMÂ
This project aims to create a versatile patio space that serves as a comfortable sitting/lounge area for daily use while being spacious enough to accommodate a dining table for occasional dinner parties. Additional elements to consider as part of this project include:
- A pathway connecting the patio to the existing deck stairs.
- A secondary path linking the parking area near the house and garage to the back of the house, incorporating stairs to navigate the elevation change.
- A potential fence or arbor at the entrance of this path (the front driveway) to create a welcoming transition.
A pergola may also be explored as an option to enhance the patio’s ambiance, though existing tree cover may already provide sufficient shade.
The design process will be guided by inspiration images, site photos, and initial sketches, ensuring that the final layout harmonizes with the existing landscape while fulfilling Susan’s functional and aesthetic goals.

SITE PHOTOS
Susan has pulled together a wonderful collection of site photos, sketches and aerial photos as a reference for you.
BASEMAPS
I've made an 11x17 plan of the project site at the scale 1/8" = 1'-0" (1:100). If you can't print 11x17, I also made a version cut in half with two 8.5x11 sheets that you can tape together if needed.
INSPIRATION PHOTOS
Susan collected a few photos to show us her ideas for materials and furniture.Â
PATIO DESIGN DEMO VIDEO
Below is a demo video of me exploring design concepts for this site using lines of force. This is the same video found on the main Patio Design landing page (I didn't want you to have to go back and search for it).
